Sunset Beach is on the North Shore of the island of Oahu and is known for its big wave surfing during the winter season and is home to world-famous Pipeline. Competitions are called out with short notice when the swells have the right size. The Triple Crown of Surfing, one of the big events on the professional surfing tour, is held here every year and surfers say that the waves at Sunset are among the most dangerous and challenging they have ever ridden. It is also home to the Duke Kahanamoku surfing competition, the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing competition, and is occasionally the site of the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational when the wave heights are right. In summer, the area is completely different as the waves are gone and snorkelers replace the surfers in the water to glimpse the beautiful reef below that creates such amazing waves.
Sunset is close to historic Haleiwa town, shopping, restaurants and recreational areas and Honolulu is approximately 1 hour away for major employment. The residential areas of Sunset Beach are comprised mostly of single-family and 2-4 unit properties and with local developmental pressures and zoning restrictions, Sunset remains a low density area with quiet streets and that “country” feel that many here so fervently protect. Few multi-family properties exist and with the absence of any high-rise buildings, the area seems to adhere to the “nothing taller than a palm tree” rule of thumb.
