Hale Papaa is not only a home, but a sustainable work of art. If owning an environmentally low-impact home is important to you, then look no further. Conceived by veteran Kauai builder Rob Brower, his wife Laurel Brier, and renowned architect Mark Eyler, Hale Papaa was completed in the summer of 2005 as the builder’s personal residence.
The owners wanted to use sustainably harvested timber as much as possible. With the exception of the decking and the handrails, all of the exposed natural finished woods have been imported from New Zealand. The eave soffits, interior wood ceilings and wood flooring are all Macrocarpa (Monterey Cyprus, which was an introduced species to NZ). The kitchen and bath cabinetry and wood tops are “Swamp Kauri” milled from the famous and now protected Kauri tree. What makes Swamp Kauri sustainable is that it was buried and preserved by a volcanic eruption 17,000 years ago and is being dug out of the ground in swampy unusable farmland. The dining table and entertainment cabinets are Rimu, a wood that is considered the “Koa of New Zealand”. Rimu is only selectively harvested by helicopters from old dying trees in forests that require selective thinning.
Every care was taken to design for maximum energy efficiency from the floor plan to accentuate the trade winds to the PV solar panels (which send power back to the grid) to the solar water heater and solar ventilating fan in the loft. This house is a benchmark to how every home on Kauai should be built. The “Extended Ohana” layout is perfect for the big family or those big reunions that this home can easily accommodate. Located on a bluff and out of the Tsunami zone (yet, a short stroll to the beach), the large organic garden, fruit trees, incredible mountain and sweeping ocean views also adorn this home with too many features to list. Water feature (artist renderings avail. upon request) may be included at additional cost.
Parking: 4 car garage and 2 separate carports.
